When it comes to getting a straight smile, Invisalign has become a popular option that many people love. You will use clear aligners to gently shift your teeth into a healthier bite. As you get adjusted to them, you will need to follow a new routine and be diligent in sticking to it. This might be tricky at first, but here are four do’s and don’ts you should know during your orthodontic journey.

Do Wear Your Aligners for 22 Hours Every Day

Patients choose aligners because they are a removable option that’s more comfortable than traditional braces. You won’t need to adjust your diet, as you can simply take them out before digging in. However, it’s important you remember to put them back in. Your trays apply constant pressure on your grin, which moves it effectively. Leaving them out too long can lead to delays, so do your best to have them in 20 to 22 hours every day.

Don’t Drink or Eat While Wearing your Trays

Building off the point above, you may be tempted to drink or eat while wearing your Invisalign, but it’s important you don’t. This treatment is made from thin plastic, so you risk damaging and making it unsafe to continue wearing. Not only that, but whatever you drink can get trapped between your teeth and it, leading to stains or cavities over time. The only thing you can have safely is plain water, so consider carrying a reusable bottle of it.

Do Keep Up with Your Oral Hygiene Routine

Since you will need to take off your aligners every time you eat, it’s important you clean out your mouth before putting them back in. Plaque and bacteria can transfer to them, leading to oral health issues that can cause problems later. Try your best to make it a habit to brush and floss; that way, you can do your best to avoid complications. It might be helpful to have a dental essentials kit handy when you’re not home.

Don’t Clean Your Aligners with Hot Water

Going off the point above, it’s important that you don’t use hot water when giving your trays a good scrubbing. They are plastic, so you risk warping them. This can make them ineffective; simply keep the water lukewarm or warm. As well, scrub them with a soft-bristle toothbrush and clear, gentle soap.

As you get used to Invisalign, you will build a routine that works for you. That way, you have a smooth treatment with little to no delays to the smile you dream of.
