Can I Get Invisalign if I’ve Had Restorative Work Done?
November 3, 2025

If you’re thinking about straightening your smile but already have dental restorations like crowns, bridges, or veneers, you may wonder whether Invisalign is still an option. The good news is that many patients with restorative work can successfully undergo Invisalign treatment—with the right planning and precautions. Here’s a closer look at how Invisalign interacts with these restorations and what you should know before beginning treatment.
Invisalign and Dental Crowns
In most cases, having one or more crowns does not disqualify you from Invisalign treatment. Clear aligners work by gently applying pressure to the teeth, and as long as the crowned tooth is healthy and firmly anchored, it can usually move just like a natural tooth. Your dentist will evaluate the condition of the crown to ensure it can withstand the movements planned.
One thing to keep in mind: Invisalign attachments may not bond as well to porcelain as they do to natural enamel. If an attachment is needed, your dentist may adapt your treatment plan to ensure predictable movement.
Invisalign and Dental Bridges
Dental bridges present a bit more complexity. Because bridges span multiple teeth, the connected teeth cannot move independently. This means that teeth that are fused together in a bridge cannot be shifted using Invisalign.
However, Invisalign may still be possible if:
- Only some of your teeth are bridged.
- Treatment focuses on teeth not connected to the bridge.
- Minor adjustments around the bridge are needed.
In some cases, your dentist may recommend re-evaluating or replacing an older bridge after treatment to better match your new tooth position.
Invisalign and Veneers
If your veneers are healthy and securely bonded, Invisalign can usually be used safely. Like crowns, veneers can make sticking attachments more challenging, but your dentist can often place attachments on other teeth or adjust the treatment approach.
It’s important to avoid using Invisalign to make aggressive movements on veneered teeth, as too much pressure could compromise the veneer. Your dental provider will carefully evaluate the stability of each veneer before proceeding.
A Personalized Evaluation is Key
Every smile is unique, especially when dental restorations are involved. Invisalign can often be tailored to work around crowns, bridges, and veneers—but only a detailed examination can determine the safest and most effective approach.
With modern digital planning and careful monitoring, Invisalign remains a great option for many patients with dental work. If you’re curious whether you’re a candidate, a consultation with your dentist or orthodontist is the best place to start.
