You may immediately assume that traditional braces are the only way to realign your pearly whites. However, an alternative exists – Invisalign. Before choosing which method to move forward with, learn about the pros and cons of each so that you are confident when talking to your dentist.

Traditional Braces: The Proven, Reliable Method

Traditional braces consist of the normal bracket-and-wire system that attaches to your teeth and shifts them over the course of 2-3 years, on average.

Every few weeks, you are required to meet your dentist for a follow-up appointment to have your wire tightened or replaced, keeping your teeth moving in the right direction.

Some of the pros associated with this type of treatment include:

  • They’re not removable, so you don’t have to worry about losing them.
  • Each patient’s treatment cost is different, but metal braces are generally cheaper and can be covered (partially) by insurance.
  • They’re capable of addressing complex dental issues.

Some of the cons that come with metal braces include:

  • Metal braces protrude and can rub against the soft oral tissues inside your mouth.
  • They can be difficult to keep clean, as you must maneuver around the various brackets and wires.
  • They require food restrictions, such as hard, chewy, and crunchy foods.

Invisalign: The Clear, Flexible Alternative

Invisalign consists of clear plastic trays that are customized based on the impressions taken of your teeth. You’re required to wear each set of trays 20-22 hours a day, 1-2 weeks at a time. You’ll need to maintain your regular follow-up appointments to allow your dentist to check on your progress and make any changes as needed. On average, you may be finished with Invisalign in 12-18 months.

Some pros about Invisalign include:

  • They’re removable, so you can take them out to eat and drink without worrying about food getting stuck.
  • They’re clear, so others are unlikely to notice your treatment.
  • They’re comfortable to wear, as the trays are smooth.
  • They are easy to clean because you can take them out.
  • They don’t require any food restrictions.

The downsides to Invisalign include:

  • Some existing restorations may be more difficult to work with, but your dentist can determine whether clear aligners can still be used.
  • Invisalign does require a level of responsibility, as you must remember to wear your trays and not lose or damage them.

Invisalign remains a preferred orthodontic solution for millions of patients. While traditional braces can fix virtually any type of misalignment or spatial concern, a clearer, more flexible way to straighten your teeth may be worth the investment in the end.
